Energy and Carbon-Dioxide Emissions
Energy. Economy. Environment. It’ s all connected.
We live in an area with relatively high energy costs. To remain competitive globally, Silicon Valley businesses and residents must be relentless in reducing energy consumption to keep our cost of living manageable and our economy healthy. We are fortunate that California leads the way in the adoption of energy efficiency standards.
Tracking Progress
SSV uses Carbon-Dioxide emissions as the benchmark to track progress in Silicon Valley’s efforts to reduce energy consumption. In 2004, SSV organized a regional voluntary initiative, setting a visionary target of reducing Carbon-Dioxide emissions by 20% below the region's 1990 levels by the year 2010. SSV Partners participating in the voluntary Carbon-Dioxide emissions reduction program determine their own baseline year and a Carbon-Dioxide percentage reduction goal to reach by 2010. Each pledging partner also chooses how they will meet this target. Options abound – from improvements in equipment efficiency to energy conservation, the use of renewable energy sources, and purchase of green power and/or promotion of alternative commute options.
