In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The  United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) recognize that the well-being of people and the planet depend on strategies that build economic growth, address a range of social needs (education, health, social protection, and job opportunities), as well as tackle climate change and environmental protection.

Sustainable development meets present day needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their needs. This includes ending all forms of poverty by creating economic growth that is inclusive and equitable for all. Additionally, there must be integrated, sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems. Sustainable development will help address climate change by reducing emissions and building climate resilience.

The UN SDGs also align well with Sustainable Silicon Valley’s focus on Air Quality/Mobility, Water Use, Net Positive Communities, and Sustainable Life. While progress is being made, the speed and scale needs to accelerate in order to deliver on the ambitious UN SDG’s by 2030.
